Patient Experience Summary

Appointment availability remains a significant challenge, with patients reporting difficulty securing timely slots through both phone and online booking systems. Phone access is particularly problematic, with callers frequently unable to reach the practice or experiencing long delays. The reception experience is inconsistent, with some patients reporting courteous staff while others describe rudeness and unhelpful attitudes that create barriers to accessing care.

Communication and administrative efficiency present ongoing concerns. Patients report medication delays, conflicting information from different staff members, and difficulties obtaining clarity on referrals and test requests. Several accounts describe extended periods waiting for prescriptions or scan confirmations, with some spanning months. The telephone appointment system has proven unreliable, with patients reporting failed contact attempts and delayed follow-up offers.

Clinical and professional care receives more positive feedback, with patients acknowledging competent doctors and nurses who demonstrate genuine care and professionalism. The online urgent appointment form system is noted as a helpful feature. However, these strengths are overshadowed by systemic issues around access, responsiveness, and administrative coordination that undermine confidence in the overall service.

A breath of fresh air.

I'm am truly grateful to Cwmbran surgery receptionists for the kindness that was shown to me whilst on the phone and also face to face. I observed how busy the surgery is and they still provide a smile and genuine care to everyone. A difficult person came into the surgery whilst I was there and it was because he broke down nothing to do with an appointment. But he was assisted offered for someone to be rang to pick him up. They tried so hard to assist him. His English language was very poor and he walked off anyway. But the genuine kindness shown was so lovely. I recently moved from another surgery in Newport which was an awful experience. But Village Surgery is like a breath of fresh air. I got a doctor's appointment with ease and follow up appointments with no issues. The doctors my husband seen was lovely too. I Thank you all for your kindness.

Poor experience I feel that at 82 and housebound I

It would seem that after 23 years of being a Patient under so many GP I no longer have the confidence of this Practice.. I wish I could afford to go Private, rather than the humiliation of this practice.

Rude, Obstructive, Corporate Bullying

Receptionists are rude, obstructive and engage in what amounts to corporate bullying. Doctors seem tired and disinterested and I can only assume that it is burnout. The overall experience is that you present situations for staff and GPs to ‘fend off’, leaving you with the feeling that they can’t wait to get you out of their consulting room. On a positive, the ability to complete an urgent appointment form online which is then triaged, is a welcome one.

I cannot praise the staff at this surgery enough

I cannot praise the staff at this surgery enough. The doctors and nurses show genuine care for their patients and consistently go above and beyond to offer support. The receptionists are always welcoming with a smile and display a caring, compassionate attitude. This is by far the best surgery I have ever experienced.

Frustrating medical experience and delayed care

I encountered significant difficulties at reception when attempting to schedule a routine blood test for my ongoing prostate cancer monitoring. The process was frustratingly challenging and deeply embarrassing, as I was forced to disclose personal medical information in a public setting just to secure an appointment. Furthermore, I've been left in limbo for over a month, still awaiting a prescription that was requested from the Outside Clinic. Additionally, my referral to the Glaucoma clinic remains pending. At this rate, I fear I might lose my sight or worse before this incompetent establishment manages to prioritize patient care. After 21 years with this healthcare provider, I'm appalled by the decline in service quality. Their inability to handle basic administrative tasks efficiently is putting patients' health at risk. It's high time they reevaluate their processes and put patients' needs first.

Rude staff and unhelpful service at reception

The reception staff's conduct was utterly deplorable, exhibiting a shocking lack of professionalism. It appeared as though they derived some perverse satisfaction from withholding assistance, coupled with an appallingly offensive demeanor. Their behavior was so egregious that they ought to hang their heads in shame. Frankly, it's difficult to fathom how such individuals maintain their employment in a customer-facing role.

General Attitude towards people

When you get through to reception they will do their upmost to get rid of you. They will cancel repeat medications without consultation. If (and I mean IF) you get through to a doctor they may be a someone who can not prescribe. Seriously if you can get into another surgery do so. The admin staff in this practise is all about keeping you on the books but not treating you. BTW the doctors are fantastic.

Poor!

Uneven staff quality at Llanyrafon medical center

While some staff members exhibit a pleasant demeanor and offer assistance, regrettably, this isn't consistent across the board. One individual, in particular, stands out as excessively rigid and bureaucratic in their approach. It's perplexing to consider the recruitment process that led to their employment. The establishment in Llanyrafon would have greatly benefited from the presence of a qualified general practitioner, which unfortunately seems to be lacking.

Dressing change appointment mishap at surgery

I attended an appointment at the surgery today at 4 PM to have the dressing on my hand changed, as requested by the plastics department under Mr. Ross Wheelse at Morriston Hospital. This was due to an incident where my hand was crushed between a caravan and a concrete post, requiring eight stitches. Upon arrival, I was asked if I had brought a dressing pack, to which I replied negatively. I explained that Morriston Hospital had simply instructed me to come for the dressing change. The nurse, visibly embarrassed, informed me that they had no bandages available in the entire surgery as they needed to be ordered. I felt sympathy for the nurse, who was clearly uncomfortable with the situation. Ultimately, she managed to obtain a prescription from the doctor to procure the necessary bandages from the pharmacy. I want to emphasize that I do not hold the nurse responsible; she could only work with the resources at her disposal, which in this case were nonexistent. I suggest that the manager address this issue promptly. It's worth noting that I've never encountered problems before, and most of the staff are exceptional. However, this experience left me quite upset and disappointed with the overall situation.

Incompetent care for severe respiratory illness

I had an awful experience with these doctors. Despite suffering from sinusitis, a chest infection, a sore throat, and a fever, I was denied antibiotics on two separate occasions. It's unbelievable that I had to visit three times in a single week, only to be dismissed repeatedly. I strongly advise against going to this practice - it's simply not worth the frustration and lack of proper care. Save yourself the trouble and seek medical attention elsewhere.

Disastrous appointment system and poor service

I recently became a patient at this medical practice, and I must say, their appointment system is nothing short of a complete shambles. While the front desk staff are pleasant enough, the same cannot be said for the office personnel who handle phone calls. Their attitude is so pompous, you'd think they were employed by royalty. Not only are they discourteous and haughty, but they also misled me regarding the status of my urgent prescription for mental health medication. It's been over seven days, and I'm still without my necessary medication. I already feel thoroughly disappointed and am seriously contemplating switching to a different practice.

By far the worst GP Surgery I have ever come across

Please escalate your concerns to HIW (Health Inspectorate Wales) https://www.hiw.org.uk/contact-us. As the practice manager will do nothing with your complaint. This surgery is by far the most appalling surgery I have ever been unfortunate to have to deal with. The Practice Manager has a lack of management skills, and rather than take on board feedback, becomes very defensive, dismissive and is unable to take any constructive feedback, your complaint will go nowhere. The staff are not trained correctly and give inaccurate information, and do not have the humility to accept when they have given inaccurate information. The response I received from a trained member of staff when I expressed my disappointment at being given inaccurate information was 'Welcome to Wales' (I previously lived in England- exceptional service there), the Practice Manager thought this was an acceptable response to my dissatisfaction. There are other surgery's in this area with better reviews, I was not surprised at all to see that Cwmbran Surgery's only has 2.8 stars on google, that in itself speaks volumes. They have also withheld my prescribed medication for the last 2 weeks.

Disappointing care and administrative issues

Over the years, I've been a patient at this surgery, and recently transferred myself and my two daughters to Charles Street. The experience has been far from satisfactory. The inconsistency in medical approaches is striking; one physician, advocating a holistic method, abruptly ceased prescribing my sleep medication despite my long-standing insomnia diagnosis from another doctor. When I sought clarification, the administrative staff dismissively stated 'no further action needed'. The incompetence of the CVS staff in utilizing their internal systems is alarming. It took multiple phone calls and a personal visit spanning from August 2023 to March 2024 to ascertain whether a scan had been requested for a worrying abdominal lump. The conflicting information provided by different staff members only added to my frustration and concern. The overall atmosphere cultivated by the reception staff is one of indifference. Many display a shocking level of rudeness, an observation echoed by other patients. Attempts to address these issues with the practice manager have proven futile. It's perplexing why individuals lacking basic empathy and compassion would choose a career in healthcare. The unreliability of the telephone appointment system is another source of frustration. I've found myself waiting with phone in hand, only to be informed later that the doctor 'couldn't reach me'. The solution offered? A text message promising a follow-up appointment in three weeks' time. While I'm certain there are some dedicated professionals at the practice, and I genuinely sympathize with their situation, the overall experience has been deeply disappointing.

Mixed experience: Great staff, poor parking

While the staff and physicians demonstrate exceptional professionalism and care, the facility's parking area leaves much to be desired. The numerous potholes marring the car park's surface stand in stark contrast to the otherwise commendable establishment. These treacherous depressions not only pose a risk to vehicles but also detract from the overall positive experience one might expect from such a reputable institution. It's a shame that such an easily rectifiable issue tarnishes the otherwise stellar reputation of this medical center and its dedicated personnel.

Nostalgic gripe about medical appointments

Back in the day, you could actually snag an appointment without breaking a sweat. Now? Good luck with that. It's like they've forgotten what customer service even means. Feels like we've gone backwards since the '90s, and not in a cool retro way. Just try getting someone on the phone these days - you'd have better luck winning the lottery. Makes you wonder if they're actively trying to lose business or if they're just that clueless. Either way, it's a far cry from the efficiency we used to enjoy. Talk about a nosedive in quality over the years.

Frustrating GP appointment struggle delays care

For the past fortnight, I've been desperately attempting to secure a GP appointment to obtain a specialist referral due to my thyroid issues. Despite phoning four times at the crack of dawn, I'm consistently met with the same disheartening response: "Regrettably, we have no available slots and are unable to assist you presently." Their online booking system is dysfunctional, compounding my frustration. Driven by necessity, I underwent a sonography abroad, which revealed a potentially cancerous growth requiring urgent investigation. Yet, the practice's stance remains unchanged: "We're unable to help." I'm left pondering the grim possibility of having to tell my children, "I'm sorry, it's too late for treatment because they couldn't assist me." To add insult to injury, I was informed that I'd been struck off their register for seeking medical attention elsewhere. The entire situation is beyond absurd and deeply concerning.
