Dismissed concerns until private ultrasound revealed the issue

I experienced severe pain on the right side of my abdomen over a weekend. The following day, I had difficulty getting out of bed and experienced chills. I contacted the out-of-hours service and was referred to a GP. A urine sample indicated a urinary tract infection and I was prescribed antibiotics, with advice to follow up with my GP to explore other potential causes of the pain. At a subsequent GP appointment, I was seen by a clinician who expressed scepticism about the advice I had received from the nurse. The clinician stated that little could be done until the infection had been treated with antibiotics. Following my instincts about my own body, I attended A&E the next day. After a lengthy wait, I was discharged without extensive investigation, though an abdominal ultrasound was arranged for a later date. I made another GP appointment and was seen by a different clinician on the 15th, who suggested the pain might be related to constipation and recommended waiting for the ultrasound results. The ultrasound subsequently revealed a ruptured cyst on my right ovary. I am deeply disappointed with the care I received from certain clinicians at this practice. This is not an isolated experience for me—I have previously felt dismissed when raising health concerns and have often needed to advocate strongly to access specialist referrals. I have noticed that the nursing staff at this surgery demonstrate a more attentive and supportive approach, and I believe the practice would benefit from adopting similar attitudes across all staff members.
