Patient feedback reveals a mixed experience across the practice, with notable variation depending on which staff member is encountered. Clinical expertise and compassionate nursing care are frequently praised, with patients appreciating attentive listening, thorough examinations, and reassuring interactions. Reception staff performance is similarly inconsistent, ranging from genuinely helpful and courteous to dismissive and impatient, particularly toward younger patients. The practice environment maintains good cleanliness standards and is generally described as welcoming.
Appointment access remains a significant concern, with patients reporting difficulty securing appointments, lengthy waiting times, and challenges with the booking system. Administrative processes are described as unreliable, with incomplete prescriptions, delayed responses to communications, and the need for persistent follow-up to achieve results. Communication quality varies considerably, with some patients feeling their concerns are not adequately addressed or heard, whilst others report positive engagement.
Since the pandemic, face-to-face appointment availability has become more constrained, with reception staff determining appointment type rather than patient preference. Patients have noted inconsistency in care standards across different clinicians, with some delivering excellent compassionate practice whilst others appear dismissive or lacking in attentiveness. The experience appears largely determined by chance, as there is no option to request specific practitioners.

Excellent!
Clean practice with genuinely helpful receptionists
This is a wonderful practice with excellent cleanliness standards. The reception team consistently demonstrates helpfulness and kindness. The clinician I recently consulted with was exceptional, providing comprehensive care and attention. It's reassuring to receive treatment from healthcare professionals who show genuine concern and treat patients with dignity.

Long-term patient appreciates thorough specialist referrals
I have been attending this practice for a considerable time and have consistently experienced high-quality care throughout my time as a patient. The team members are exceptionally helpful, friendly, and attentive to patient needs. The allied health services provided are particularly impressive, and the clinician always dedicates sufficient time to address my concerns and arrange referrals to suitable specialists as appropriate. I would strongly encourage others to consider this practice.

Poor!
Phone lines feel dismissive and hard to reach
Communication frequently falls short, coming across as dismissive, which may be attributed to heightened demand and systemic constraints, though this does not justify the approach. The absence of a patient-focused perspective is evident from initial phone contact through to consultations with certain practitioners, who are notably memorable for negative reasons. Securing an in-person appointment proves challenging, as administrative personnel determine appointment type regardless of individual preference or the nature of symptoms reported. The standard of care and service provided by certain practitioners has shown little advancement over time, despite stated commitments to ongoing review and improvement through regular meetings. Patient feedback patterns suggest some individuals warrant avoidance, with a noticeable shift away from compassionate practice in favour of operational efficiency. A small number of administrative and clinical staff have consistently delivered positive experiences, though some are no longer with the practice. The experience is largely determined by chance, depending on which staff member you encounter first and subsequently who provides your care, as there is no option to request specific practitioners. Non-administrative and non-clinical staff demonstrate efficiency alongside genuine kindness and clear communication, presenting a marked contrast to other team members who could benefit from observing their approach. Pursuing a formal complaint regarding your care may result in feeling treated unfairly thereafter. One receptionist managed the complaint process helpfully and with patience, though a subsequent call revealed inconsistent handling from another team member. The Practice Manager showed limited understanding of the reasons prompting the complaint, offering a reluctant acknowledgement before redirecting focus to procedural errors in the complaint itself. Being disappointed by care is difficult; being made to feel you must fight to be acknowledged as a person rather than a case number compounds this frustration significantly. Enquiring about learning measures following identified issues was interpreted as demanding perfection, resulting in a note added to your NHS app record addressing this perception. As with many organisations, a minority of staff members substantially damage the practice's reputation. Based on other patient accounts, submitting a critical review may prompt a public response containing complaint details and medical information.

Bad!
Waiting room was hot, stuffy and unnecessarily loud
I attended an appointment recently and experienced a significant delay of more than thirty minutes before being seen. The waiting area was cramped and overcrowded, with an uncomfortably warm atmosphere. Music was playing at a high volume through the speakers. There is a poster displayed requesting patients to silence their mobile devices and be mindful of other unwell visitors, though it appears this consideration may not extend to the auditory environment, which can be particularly distressing for those who are unwell, have sensory sensitivities, or are neurodivergent. The receptionist was helpful and reduced the volume when I mentioned it. The clinician did not acknowledge the delay. Overall, the visit left me feeling quite anxious and unsettled.

4 months agoThank you for your comments and I am sorry for the difficult experience you had. Your comments are totally valid and I have instructed the Receptionists to ensure that the radio is at "background" levels. It does help to make the waiting area less sterile but it should not be intrusive. All the doctors should apologise if they are running late and I am sorry this did not happen. I will remind them all. Kind regards Malcolm MacDonald Practice Manager

Felt genuinely listened to and well cared for
Took my grandchild in today. I was pleased to see the same clinician I've seen before. As always, she listened attentively, conducted a thorough examination and managed her time well, whilst being particularly good with children. I'm puzzled by an earlier negative review about this clinician - it seemed quite at odds with my own experience. This was my third visit with her, and I genuinely feel she has made a significant positive difference to my care on previous occasions. She has restored my confidence in this part of the NHS. I'm very grateful for the care provided.

Phone staff went the extra mile
I would like to express my gratitude to the exceptionally supportive and courteous staff member who assisted me over the phone today. They made considerable effort to help me arrange an appointment with a healthcare professional. I regret that I didn't think to ask for their name at the time, but they are clearly a valued member of the practice team.

Felt listened to during blood test appointment
I had an absolutely wonderful experience during my visit today. The nursing staff member I saw was incredibly patient and took time to explain everything clearly. The blood test procedure was carried out so skillfully that I barely felt anything at all. It was genuinely a pleasure to be seen and cared for. The practice is fortunate to have such dedicated and compassionate healthcare professionals on their team.

Second visit lacked proper follow-up discussion
I have updated my review. I am raising my rating from 3 to 4 stars, though with some reservations. I attended the clinic on two occasions but was only able to see a clinician on one of those visits. The healthcare professional I saw was considerate and made a genuine effort to assess and address my symptoms, though my condition was ultimately resolved through my own investigation and self-directed action. The initial prescription I received did not prove helpful for my situation, and relying solely on daily antihistamines felt more like managing symptoms rather than addressing the underlying issue. I later determined that I had experienced an acute allergic reaction triggered by exposure to a substance used by someone in close proximity to me, which had caused a severe reaction. During my second appointment, I did not consult with a clinician. I provided samples, but the results were not explained to me in a thorough or meaningful way. Instead, I received a text message with findings that seemed questionable given the nature of the sample provided. I have removed my previous comments regarding broader healthcare system policies, as the clinic itself cannot be held responsible for those factors. I should note that the reception staff were helpful and professional. I also recognise that the clinic cannot be faulted for limitations in available pharmaceutical options or individual clinician expertise, as staffing challenges are a genuine concern in healthcare. However, there are areas where improvements could be made, particularly regarding appointment accessibility. The current system for booking appointments creates unnecessary stress for patients seeking care, and the lack of structured follow-up communication can leave people feeling unsupported. This was not an issue during my first visit, but it was evident during my second. There is hope that these aspects will be enhanced in the future.

Reception staff made complaints difficult to pursue
This practice was previously excellent, and there remain some capable healthcare professionals on staff, however standards have declined following the pandemic period. Should you wish to lodge a formal complaint, the process involves navigating administrative procedures that can feel adversarial rather than focused on addressing concerns or responding appropriately to requests, as may become apparent in any subsequent correspondence.

Receptionists helpful and staff genuinely sympathetic
I feel I must write in praise of this medical centre. All the staff are very pleasant, and the receptionists are always polite and helpful, and sympathetic. In particular, I must mention the clinician I have seen a few times recently. Every time I have been impressed by their genuine interest and concern for their patients. I have never felt rushed, and I feel I have been given enough time. They seem very knowledgeable, and most of all I am impressed by their thoroughness in checking for all sorts of symptoms that I might have had. They are lovely to deal with, warm and caring, and I would recommend them to anyone.

Dismissed and unheard during a distressing appointment
I had an extremely distressing experience at a local medical centre. I attended an appointment regarding a severe infection and subsequently called back because the medication I had been prescribed appeared to worsen my symptoms. I was also concerned that a family member had begun to develop similar symptoms. During the consultation, I felt the clinician was dismissive of my concerns. I experienced being interrupted while attempting to explain my situation, and felt that my worries were not being properly addressed. When I tried to discuss how my condition had progressed and my concerns about my family member, I was advised to book a separate appointment rather than receive immediate assistance. When I questioned this approach, the response felt cold and unhelpful. I felt the behaviour demonstrated a lack of professionalism and compassion, which I believe is important in healthcare settings. The distress of feeling unheard and being redirected to another appointment left me upset and preoccupied. During this difficult time, a stressful incident occurred at home involving a family member. I feel this situation could have been prevented had the clinician shown greater understanding and willingness to engage with my concerns. I am disappointed by the level of care and professionalism I experienced during this appointment. I believe that patients, particularly those seeking help for health concerns affecting their family, deserve to be treated with greater attentiveness and support.

one year agoDear Felicity, you have raised this complaint with the practice and we have responded. I do not intend to make these matters public other than to say there are many other issues regarding your interaction with the practice. We are very sorry that you had a difficult experience and that you found it "rude, dismissive....uncaring and unprofessional". That would certainly not be the intention of any member of staff at Idle Medical Centre. I would also say that your experience with Dr Khan is in stark contrast to hundreds of other patients who have had very positive experiences. Idle Medical Centre

Doctor dismissed concerns without proper investigation
I experienced a disappointing consultation regarding my tailbone injury. The advice given felt inadequate for my situation, essentially suggesting a hot bath as the primary solution. Given my work commitments, childcare responsibilities, and household duties, this recommendation wasn't practical for me. Additionally, I was unable to rest as suggested due to discomfort when lying down. I requested a referral for imaging to rule out further injury, particularly given that I had been experiencing continuous pain for eight weeks. This request was not addressed, and rather than receiving a direct conversation, I received only a written response through the patient portal. I subsequently sought a private consultation with another practitioner who provided a same-day telephone appointment. This clinician took time to listen to my concerns and offered pain management options. Although this required a private prescription at personal cost, I felt the support justified the expense after enduring prolonged discomfort. I recognise that other clinicians at the practice have provided excellent care. However, this particular experience fell significantly short of the standard I would expect, and I felt let down by the approach taken to my concerns.

one year agoDear Jodie, I am sorry you do not feel that we have dealt with your issue appropriately. I would be more than happy to discuss with you if you want to call the practice. I would like to make 3 points. Firstly, if you contact us through Patch's then you are likely to get a reply through the same system. Secondly, with any broken bone there will be a period of pain and discomfort that cannot always be fully removed. As someone who broke their arm last year, I know it was 9 months before the pain was fully gone. Thirdly, clinicians will only refer for an xray if they believe there is truly a benefit as we try to make best use of NHS resources. Kind Regards, Malcolm MacDonald Practice Manager
