Appointment access remains the dominant concern across feedback, with patients reporting persistent difficulties reaching the practice by phone, encountering engaged lines, dropped calls, and rapid exhaustion of available slots within minutes of opening. The booking experience is characterised by long waiting times on hold, inaccessible online systems, and frequent redirection to alternative services such as walk-in centres or NHS 111. Communication barriers extend beyond appointment scheduling, with patients struggling to reach reception staff for follow-up queries and prescription requests.
Clinical care experiences are mixed. While some patients report responsive and supportive doctors, others describe dismissive interactions, minimal consultation time, and unresponsive approaches to patient concerns. Reception experiences similarly vary, with some staff noted as courteous and helpful, whilst others are described as unprofessional, rude, or unhelpful. Several patients highlighted positive experiences with specific nursing and clinical staff members who demonstrated care and attentiveness.
The practice environment and operational capacity present ongoing challenges. Patients report overcrowded waiting areas, long queues forming before opening hours, and a general sense that the practice is unable to accommodate its patient load effectively. These systemic issues appear to have intensified since the pandemic, with patients noting a marked decline in service quality and accessibility compared to previous years.

Frustrating gp visit with zero help
I've attempted to see my doctor just once during the pandemic period, and the consultation was incredibly frustrating. The physician seemed completely unfamiliar with my medical history, even requiring me to explain the purpose of my current medications. Their appointment scheduling process is absurdly complicated - patients are expected to call precisely at 8am, but repeatedly encounter busy signals. When you finally connect, you're forced to endure a lengthy two-minute explanation about their system, followed by extensive waiting queues. By the time you reach a receptionist, all appointments are invariably gone, whether you're seeking same-day, advance, or even clinical callback options. They impose restrictive communication windows, like allowing only a one-hour window for receiving test results. To compound the inconvenience, they shut down operations mid-day on Wednesdays. Ironically, despite these convoluted access barriers, their waiting room consistently remains completely empty.

Long wait and stressed doctors
I've been a patient at this medical practice since 2010, but the service quality has significantly declined since the COVID pandemic. Last November, I accompanied a friend to a morning appointment at Pear tree, where we encountered a chaotic entrance with a lengthy queue. People were coughing extensively, and tensions rose as some argued about potential queue-jumping. When my friend finally saw the doctor, the consultation lasted barely two minutes. A similar experience occurred in January at Oakwood surgery, where another early morning appointment revealed a stressed and rushed doctor dealing with a long queue. My friend, who uses a wheelchair and has physical disabilities, felt particularly uncomfortable. Personally struggling with sciatica, I now resort to the urgent treatment centre on Osmaston Road for pain relief medication. Securing an appointment at Oakwood surgery near my home is incredibly challenging, with phone lines consistently difficult to access. Their e-consultation service is equally frustrating, often responding that no more referrals can be accepted that day. This ongoing struggle is exhausting, and I've even resorted to using alcohol for pain relief on occasion - a far from ideal solution. I'm sharing this experience in the slim hope that the service might improve, though I'm not optimistic about any meaningful changes.

Quick care when I needed help
Dr. Zarif was incredibly responsive when I needed medical attention, promptly scheduling an appointment to address my health concerns. I truly appreciate the doctor's commitment to ensuring I received timely care and was seen quickly. Thank you for going above and beyond to prioritize my well-being.

Endless calls at 8 am got me nowhere
Customer service has completely deteriorated - I attempted calling repeatedly using an auto dialler and the 'q 4 you' app, making 44 separate attempts! With just 5 seconds between each call, I only connected 3 times starting precisely at 8 am. When I pressed option 1 for appointments at 8:01 am this morning, the message claimed they were busy and advised calling back later. It's absolutely unacceptable that they seemingly have no staff available to answer calls at 8 am, which is outrageous considering people pay taxes for this level of service. It's no surprise people are giving up on calling and just showing up at the surgery instead. At every site, you'll find receptionists idle and chatting among themselves. They desperately need formal training in reception management - something I've personally completed. The basic standards should be answering calls within three rings, being courteous, and efficient. This is a pathetic example of NHS service, with standards plummeting dramatically. One has to wonder if they even have supervisors monitoring and managing operations anymore!

Terrible gp with impossible phone calls
Every time I ring, the line is engaged, and I always ask for a callback instead of waiting on hold. Yet, whenever someone attempts to return my call, it's an incredibly brief conversation before they abruptly disconnect. My phone literally rings for just a second, forcing me to call back repeatedly. WHY????!!!!Are they just goofing around at reception? This happening consistently is seriously strange. And additionally, they NEVER, and I mean NEVER, have any appointments available!!!! Whenever I need someone to examine my child, they magically have zero staff free. They absolutely refuse to assist me, immediately redirecting me to the hospital or elsewhere without a second thought. This is absolutely the most useless GP practice ever! Completely absent when you desperately need medical support!

Busy lines killed my morning appointment hopes
absolute garbage, what's the purpose anymore when you dial precisely at 8am and the phone line is jammed despite that being the designated start time, and scheduling an appointment is practically unattainable - I swear everything has completely deteriorated since the pandemic hit

Unhelpful staff at oakwood surgery
I visited the Lister House Oakwood medical practice today, seeking vaccination for an upcoming trip in three weeks. The receptionist was completely unhelpful, declining to investigate my required immunizations or explore the possibility of an early appointment for my shots. Her sole suggestion was that I seek private medical treatment. I wasn't alone in experiencing this subpar service; another patient in front of me was visibly upset, with the receptionist repeatedly instructing her to attempt booking an appointment at 8 AM the next morning. This interaction occurred in a waiting room that was entirely empty, making the lack of assistance even more frustrating.

Waiting a month for a simple blood test
I consulted my local doctor about numbness in my right leg. I was absent from work on Monday but couldn't secure an appointment until Thursday, which was incredibly annoying. I felt trapped in a bureaucratic maze as the urgent care facility directed me to my GP for diagnostic bloodwork, only to then require me to return to their centre for the same test. Booking my blood test involved using an online platform called "Swift queue", and I was only able to schedule the test a full month after my initial consultation. The waiting periods are consistently prolonged, and although the healthcare staff are pleasant and cordial, I believe the overall healthcare service requires significant enhancement. Based on my personal experience, I would give this medical practice a rating of 2 stars.

Endless calls just to see a doctor
For the third consecutive morning, I've called at 8:00 AM only to be informed that no appointments are accessible. Following the receptionist's guidance, I reached out to 111 since I urgently require a medical certificate for my workplace. The surgery refuses to issue the document without examining me, though this isn't due to lack of effort on my part. 111 has now scheduled a telephone consultation with my doctor for tomorrow. The entire process is incredibly exasperating, wasteful of time, and fundamentally ineffective.

Nurse Fiona made my checkup stress-free
Visited with Nurse Fiona today and had a wonderful experience. She was incredibly personable, which helped me feel completely comfortable. Her professional approach was spot on. The front desk staff were equally delightful and went out of their way to be supportive.

Booking nightmare at this clinic
Scheduling a consultation here is a constant struggle. Attempting to use their online e-consult system only results in a generic response urging you to book an appointment, which, ironically, seems completely unattainable.

Frustrating wait and dismissive doctor's office
I repeatedly attempted to schedule an appointment, only to be repeatedly informed that no slots were available, despite being 36th in line. Logically, there should be more than 36 openings. It seems like they discriminate based on appearance, and they even falsify records by claiming I disconnected the call. I've been a patient at this practice for 55 years, and as the clinic has grown, their focus has shifted from patient care to maximizing profit.

Desperate for help with persistent cough
There are zero available appointment slots at this practice. They consistently redirect patients to urgent care. I've visited urgent care numerous times for myself and my family. Urgent care staff are questioning why the GP is sending patients to them when they have limited treatment capabilities. It's more advisable to contact 111 or 999 instead of attempting to schedule an appointment here. The GP seems to be playing a game of passing responsibility, like passing a football between staff. I previously consulted the GP about my persistent cough, and I'm genuinely concerned I might suffocate. An x-ray was conducted in August showing no abnormalities, yet my cough remains. Should I choke and die, the GP will bear responsibility for not providing appointments. I became emotionally overwhelmed and raised my voice at reception due to the lack of appointments and my critical health situation. Anyone who has experienced the terrifying sensation of potential choking would understand my distress.

Impossible to reach after 8 am queue
If I could, I'd give zero stars. The absolute worst general practitioner in Derby. Securing an appointment is a nightmare; they rarely even answer the phone. At 8:02 AM, I was assigned queue number 50, and when they finally called back, they informed me no appointments were available for the day. Throughout the entire week, their phone went unanswered, with a constant message that the line was unreachable. FOR A WHOLE WEEK!!! This medical practice is utterly appalling.

Impossible to reach during family emergency
I'm tempted to label their service as repulsive, but there's hardly even a service to critique. My elderly parents are attempting to communicate, and I'm trying to reach out from overseas. All I encounter are dismissive responses like "we're occupied, call back later" - this medical facility should be thoroughly embarrassed by their unprofessional conduct.

Nightmare wait in freezing morning queue
Getting an appointment here is a nightmare. Their phone booking system is completely useless, forcing patients to line up outside in any kind of weather starting at dawn just to secure a slot. The service is absolutely abysmal.

Six days of phone call frustration
For six consecutive days, I've been attempting to schedule a GP appointment, with the first five days resulting in complete failure to even enter the queue. While I recognize the current healthcare pressures, the process of making dozens of calls (today's 29 attempts were actually considered low) just to join a waiting list, only to find zero available appointments, is absurdly frustrating. How can this system possibly accommodate elderly or vulnerable patients? My friend, who is in her early 90s, has completely abandoned trying to contact the surgery due to these insurmountable barriers, which undoubtedly poses significant risks to her health. E-Consult was non-functional, and when operational, it simply redirected me back to the surgery. My medical concern isn't severe enough for A&E or Urgent Care, leaving me in a bewildering predicament. Am I expected to passively wait, hoping my condition miraculously resolves (which it certainly won't), or deteriorate to the point of becoming an urgent case?
