Receptionist didn't help with my prescription request

I attended the practice yesterday morning to request a repeat prescription. During my interaction with a receptionist at the front desk, I felt that I was not treated with the care and respect I would have expected. As someone with significant communication needs, I found that the support I received was inadequate. I believe that receptionists have an important responsibility to assist all patients with patience and consideration, and in this instance, I did not feel this standard was met.

Missed appointments and poor follow-through lately

Things seem to have deteriorated recently. Blood tests have been overlooked and necessary referrals haven't been processed. When a family member had a health concern, they were advised to contact 111 due to lack of available appointments. The 111 service indicated they had arranged a telephone consultation with the surgery for that same day, but the call never came through. This resulted in having to follow up independently and attend an alternative walk-in centre instead. The overall standard of care appears to have declined noticeably over the past couple of years. Appointment availability remains a significant challenge. The practice would likely benefit from additional clinical staff to help address these issues.

Reception and doctors made me feel genuinely heard

I felt compelled to share some feedback because I wanted the entire team at the medical practice in Blyth — including all clinical and administrative staff — to understand how valued they are. I became a patient at this practice two years ago. Initially, I was hesitant about engaging with them due to disappointing encounters at my previous surgery. For quite some time, I actually chose to seek medical care abroad rather than access services locally. That said, my experience with this practice has been genuinely outstanding. The clinical staff and team members are warm, compassionate, considerate, and consistently invest time in communicating clearly. They provide guidance in a respectful manner, and they approach their work with genuine care and professionalism. Every person on the team, whether in administrative or clinical roles, merits acknowledgment. I am truly grateful, and I want them to recognise how much their efforts mean to me.

Reception staff pleasant but prescribing practices deeply concerning

STEER CLEAR 1. They suggest your medical concerns may not be physical in nature. (Note: I have since received a private diagnosis for a significant health condition) 2. They remove medications from repeat prescriptions without warning. I've needed to escalate this issue twice now. 3. They decline to prescribe medication for a child who qualifies for free prescriptions, suggesting over-the-counter alternatives are more cost-effective instead. 4. They similarly avoid issuing prescriptions for patients who are exempt from prescription charges. 5. Their clinical guidance is disappointing and raises questions about professional standards. I have seen four different practitioners throughout my life and this experience has been particularly poor. It hardly seems worthwhile having a GP at all. The reception team are pleasant and helpful.

Impossible to book an appointment while working

I have been attempting to secure a follow-up appointment for three weeks. Each time I contact the practice, I am directed to call at a specific time on a particular day the following week. However, when I call at that time, the available slots have already been taken. This cycle continues with the same instruction repeated. The appointment system appears to disadvantage those with work commitments, as the booking window seems incompatible with standard working hours.

Reception team made booking through the app easy

I'm recently registered at the practice having relocated to the area at the end of last year. I'm very impressed with the service I've received so far from the very friendly reception team, some excellent advice from a clinician and a very thorough annual health review from a very friendly and professional member of the clinical team. I have used the NHS App for all contact so far and have found it extremely easy to navigate and that my different queries were dealt with in a timescale I would expect for each - urgent matters treated quickly and routine appointments booked in advance. Excellent, thank you, well done to the team.

Reception staff weren't polite or helpful

This practice provides poor quality care. The clinician I saw appeared to lack competence in interpreting imaging scans and admitted unfamiliarity with certain diagnostic procedures. I was initially told my respiratory health was satisfactory, yet was then referred to a specialist who identified a serious condition that should have been caught earlier. The reception staff were also unhelpful and discourteous throughout my visits. I would not recommend this practice to others.
