A great medical practice

I've generally always had a positive experience with Putneymead - the medical team are knowledgeable and thorough, admin team helpful, and the waiting room has plenty of leaflets along with a BP machine. I had a reassuring consultation with Dr Read, who thoroughly worked through the symptoms and identified a solution to an ongoing problem, for which I was very grateful. I'd recommend this practice.

Modern practice let down by prescription delays

Update: Really impressed with this GP practice, it feels very modern and I feel fortunate compared to many others across the country. They even offer appointments scheduled days or weeks in advance based on your availability, which is quite different from other practices I've experienced. The overall system appears to run smoothly. (Medication did arrive on time in the end.) ----- Four stars because the practice is newly established, well-designed, modern, and the clinical staff seem competent so far with friendly reception staff. However, there have been some frustrating inefficiencies that have caused unnecessary delays, resulting in my medication arriving approximately a week late after my supply ran out. I contacted the practice over a week ago regarding a prescription issue. The reception team indicated I didn't require an in-person appointment and attempted to reorder it. This didn't resolve the matter, and I subsequently received a call from a clinician explaining that blood work was needed. A message from the practice a week earlier could have clarified this requirement. Now I'm facing a gap in my medication supply. This level of miscommunication didn't occur at my previous practice.

Staff listen and treat you with dignity

I have been attending this practice for several years and consistently experienced outstanding care. The team members, from those answering phones to the clinical staff, demonstrate politeness, expertise and professionalism at all times. I have always felt respected, heard and confident that my concerns are being taken seriously. I have genuine confidence in the practitioners here. There is one area where I believe the service could be further improved: the addition of specialist support for hormonal life transitions and associated symptoms. Given that a significant proportion of the patient population will require assistance with this at some stage, I would encourage the practice to explore this possibility.

The clinician I see is very thorough in checking up with me to ensure my treatment plan is followed so I can maintain optimum quality of life. I have experienced significant frustration with administrative processes at this surgery. I have made multiple attempts to arrange the transfer of my medical records from my previous practice, but this has not been completed. Additionally, there have been issues with my medication management, including delayed responses to review requests and difficulties obtaining regular prescription renewals despite completing the necessary medical assessments. I have also noticed inconsistencies between the guidance provided by the telephone service and the in-person staff, which has made the transition to this surgery quite challenging overall.

Every time I need to call the surgery, I feel anxious because I don't feel confident in the service. After many years in London, this is by far the worst surgery I have experienced, and I believe the management approach contributes significantly to this. Inconsistent and unpredictable service quality. The experience shifts rapidly from feeling heard and supported to sensing that concerns are not being properly acknowledged or acted upon. Reviewing a patient's record showing numerous appointments within a short timeframe raises questions about the effectiveness of the care pathway. A referral made at the initial consultation could have prevented the need for multiple follow-up visits to obtain the same outcome, sparing considerable ongoing distress. Initially, there was a sense of being listened to, but over time this changed to feeling like a burden to the practice. The facility itself is well-maintained and most staff members are conscientious in their roles, yet there appears to be a gap between professional competence and genuine empathetic engagement. Those with neurodivergent traits or chronic health conditions may find the support offered falls short of their needs. Patients with ongoing health issues face difficult choices: invest significant emotional and financial energy advocating for basic support within the practice, or pursue private healthcare at considerable expense, which may offer little meaningful difference. Either path requires substantial personal sacrifice.
