Patient Experience Summary

Patient feedback reveals a mixed experience with significant operational challenges alongside strong clinical care. Appointment access remains a persistent concern, with patients reporting lengthy waiting times ranging from three weeks to several months, combined with difficult phone access where calls frequently go unanswered or result in long hold times. Reception experience is inconsistent, with multiple reports of discourteous or dismissive staff behaviour, though some patients have encountered welcoming and professional receptionists. In contrast, medical professionals—doctors and nursing staff—consistently receive praise for compassion, attentiveness, and clinical expertise. The practice has implemented improvements including online booking systems, digital check-in, and e-consultation services, which some patients find valuable. Facility condition and administrative efficiency have been noted as areas needing attention, though the practice is actively working to enhance patient access and communication channels. Community initiatives offering health and wellness programs are valued by patients.

The practice demonstrates capability in delivering high-quality medical care, with particular strengths in paediatric services and follow-up care. However, the gap between clinical excellence and operational accessibility creates frustration for patients seeking timely appointments or responsive phone support. Medication availability and prescription processing have occasionally been problematic. Long waiting times in the clinic environment and inconsistent service quality across different staff members contribute to the mixed perception. Patients who successfully navigate the booking process and access appointments generally report positive care experiences, suggesting that operational improvements to appointment availability and reception courtesy would significantly enhance overall satisfaction.

Exceptional service despite technical challenges

The staff at the front desk consistently provide exceptional service, and I frequently secure immediate consultations. Even during technical difficulties with their systems, I can rely on them to arrange a physician's follow-up and obtain a prescription promptly.

Surprisingly good care behind uninviting exterior

Despite the building's somewhat dilapidated appearance, which initially gave me pause, I've discovered this GP surgery to be incredibly responsive and accommodating. Their swift handling of my inquiries has genuinely impressed me, prompting me to share my positive experience through this review.

Poor!

Declining service from once-great medical practice

I've been a patient at this medical practice for over 30 years, initially seeing Dr. Worth, Dr. Keene, and other exceptional general practitioners. However, the practice has dramatically changed, and not for the better. Now, calorie interactions begin with an automated message outlining various options. When the DVLA requested medical information for my annual driving license renewal - which requires comprehensive medical examinations - the practice bizarrely submitted decade-old archived documentation! To make matters worse, Homerton hospital staff, displaying remarkable interpersonal incompetence, inexplicably suggested I might be depressed and at risk of self-harm. This occurred simply because I requested clear details about my diagnosis following a cystoscopy and CT scan, and inquired about my upcoming fast-tracked surgical procedure. Despite being articulate, mentally sound, and communicating politely while understandably anxious, I was treated as though I urgently needed Samaritan intervention. The fundamental question remains: WHY has accessing a GP become so incredibly challenging in what was once an outstanding medical practice?

Bad!

Terrible healthcare service that fails patients completely

This medical practice is utterly ineffective. They consistently fail to have medications available when patients require them. Their process for requesting critical prescriptions is excessively slow, leaving patients without essential treatments and offering no viable alternatives. The staff handling phone calls and medication requests are demonstrably incompetent. I have personally experienced these issues at least five separate times and am preparing to submit a formal complaint. The level of care they deliver is completely unacceptable and shamefully unprofessional.

Unhelpful gp made me feel worse about my health

Sharing my personal encounter with this medical practice, based on my experience with one of their general practitioners. The reception staff was incredibly welcoming and accommodating. Scheduling and communication via telephone was seamless and uncomplicated. Unfortunately, I felt deeply uncomfortable during my consultation. After enduring symptoms for over a year, I struggled to fully articulate my concerns as the GP seemed eager to conclude our interaction quickly. They dismissively suggested ADHD is merely a trendy condition, implying its diagnosis was unimportant. The practitioner also made me feel inadequate by suggesting I must actively desire improvement, which was precisely why I sought medical advice. I was even questioned about my expected treatment, which seemed counterintuitive - isn't consulting a GP precisely for addressing health concerns? While they might have perceived my issues as non-critical, that's why I had postponed seeking help for so long. I received a prescription, but remain unclear about my actual diagnosis. Candidly, the consultation left me feeling more emotionally distressed than before. Perhaps self-management might be a more constructive approach.

Poor!

Terrible service and complete communication breakdown

I submitted an online access code application along with a passport photocopy, which I directly gave to a front desk staff member. Despite this, I've received absolutely no response. When I returned to inquire about the form, they incredibly claimed they never received it and suggested I complete another application - absolutely ridiculous. I'm unable to schedule a doctor's appointment, and I've been sending emails to the practice for more than a month without any acknowledgment. Do they no longer care about my health?

Terrible service and frustrating medical practice experience

The most terrible general practitioner I've encountered - absolutely avoid joining this clinic! Getting through to the reception takes an eternity - though I'll admit the staff are actually quite helpful once you finally connect. My doctor referred me for blood tests, so I scheduled an appointment at Homerton. Upon arrival, the hospital informed me the referral forms hadn't been transmitted. After spending 30 minutes on hold, I eventually reached someone who confirmed the doctor would send the forms, which they subsequently did. Three weeks later (despite being told someone would contact me within 3-5 days), I received a text stating the originally requested blood tests were incorrect, and I'd need to schedule another appointment with the proper tests. Following such an incompetent process for what should be a straightforward, routine procedure, I am definitively switching GP practices. I strongly urge anyone contemplating registering with Somerford Grove Practice to carefully evaluate alternative options.

Rude receptionist ruins otherwise excellent medical practice

Firstly, I want to highlight the exceptional medical care I've received here, with doctors and nurses who have been incredibly polite, professional, and supportive, providing excellent follow-up care. During my previous two visits, the reception staff were equally professional and helpful. However, my most recent appointment has dramatically altered my perception of the practice, solely due to an extremely rude and inappropriate receptionist. Previously, during COVID, entry was only possible by ringing the front doorbell, which I understood as a measure to minimize potential exposure in the waiting area. I now realize this policy has changed, but having not visited recently, I followed the previous protocol by ringing and holding the bell as instructed. The receptionist's response was aggressive and hostile: 'DON'T DO THAT. THE DOOR IS OPEN!' I attempted to apologize and explain that I was merely following prior instructions, but she continued to berate me loudly, shouting, 'AND PLEASE DON'T HOLD DOWN THE BUTTON LIKE THAT'. Feeling publicly humiliated, I decided to enter before further confrontation. As a polite, professional 40-year-old with dyslexia and ADHD, I found this interaction deeply inappropriate. Such treatment could be profoundly distressing for individuals with learning difficulties or neurodivergent conditions who are sincerely trying to follow instructions during a confusing time. While the nurse I saw was excellent, the entire experience was overshadowed by feeling belittled and condescended to, as if I were stupid for attempting to adhere to procedure. It is crucial, especially in a medical setting, that front-of-house staff do not discriminate against disabilities or neurodivergence, and avoid power plays that dismiss patient experiences. In my professional work, we consistently ensure such assumptions are never made. It's disappointing that this one interaction has tarnished the otherwise outstanding reputation of the practice. Though it might seem trivial, such interactions can transform already anxiety-inducing medical visits from supportive experiences to potentially traumatic encounters.

Terrible phone service and frustrating appointment scheduling

Attempting to schedule a consultation via telephone is an incredibly frustrating experience. The wait time to have someone answer the call exceeds an hour, and once connected, they merely offer a phone-based appointment slot. This approach is entirely unhelpful, and the actual in-person appointment is then scheduled weeks in the future. Overall, the service quality is extremely disappointing and inefficient.

Frustrating service but decent medical professionals

Negatives: The practice is overwhelmed with patients, with wait times consistently exceeding 30 minutes, and approximately half of the calls go unanswered, resulting in abrupt disconnections. The on-hold music and message are incredibly irritating and repetitive. While some might perceive the receptionists as discourteous, it seems they are simply overwhelmed, stressed, and eager to expedite interactions to manage the high volume of patients. Their approach doesn't feel intentionally personal. The facility itself is in poor condition. Positives: The general practitioners and nursing staff are consistently helpful and professional. They offer an e-consult service with a guaranteed callback.
