Patient Experience Summary

Patient feedback reveals a mixed experience with significant variation in service quality across different areas of the practice. Clinical care from doctors and nursing staff is frequently praised as excellent, compassionate, and thorough, with many patients reporting positive outcomes and feeling heard during consultations. However, appointment access and reception experience present persistent challenges, with patients describing difficulties reaching the practice by phone, long waiting times in queues, delayed callbacks, and inconsistent courtesy from front desk staff. Some patients report reception staff acting as gatekeepers, withholding information about alternative booking options or redirecting patients inappropriately without clinical consultation.

Communication gaps and follow-up issues emerge as notable concerns, particularly around test results, specialist referrals, and medication management. Several patients describe feeling dismissed or unsupported when raising ongoing health concerns, with some experiencing delays in receiving necessary investigations or treatment adjustments. Conversely, many patients acknowledge the practice's responsiveness during urgent situations and appreciate the introduction of callback systems that have improved access.

The feedback suggests the practice delivers strong clinical care but faces operational challenges in managing appointment demand and maintaining consistent, respectful reception interactions. Patients recognise NHS pressures but expect more reliable communication, better phone responsiveness, and consistent professionalism from all team members.

Fantastic service

Since being at Stenhouse for many years. I've always been happy with the service I've received from all staff. I want to give a big shout out to Dr Carey. She is a fantastic doctor who is very professional, caring and always has time to listen never feel rushed. Came out of my appointment reassured that I have the support and referral been done urgently to get the help I need. Thank you

Sarah at the desk really made the difference

I had an appointment yesterday and wanted to commend the outstanding service from receptionist Sarah, who was incredibly courteous and genuinely eager to assist. The ANP Julie was equally impressive - efficient, professional, and made me feel at ease the entire time. She was also very attentive in offering support throughout my visit.

got him to A&E within an hour

We called to book an appointment and described my husband's symptoms. The practice got back to us right away, had him in within an hour, and promptly sent him to A&E. Their assessment turned out to be spot on, so we're grateful to the medical team for their swift care. Everyone at the surgery, from the doctors to the reception staff, has treated us with genuine warmth and support. The receptionists in particular have always been wonderfully kind and accommodating. Thank you Stenhouse.

Hospitals ignored our warnings about daughter's kidneys

**update** - following the circumstances detailed below and persistent disregard shown to my daughter, we now face the possibility of my daughter sustaining kidney damage despite repeatedly voicing our concerns throughout the four-month period of attempting to get both Stenhouse and Sherwood hospitals trust to listen. Please learn from our experience and consider registering your children at a different facility! Generally speaking, the standard of care my daughter has received has been excellent, but our recent interactions with one particular GP have been deeply disappointing. When you're advised to allow your 3 year old to remain untreated due to medication costs, it becomes clear that the NHS is fundamentally failing.

The maternity antenatal services are inadequate. It's impossible to reach my community midwife. Both the phone numbers listed on the website and given by the front desk are outdated and non-functional.

receptionist wouldn't even check my records

Called to check on my test results and was met with a dismissive receptionist who was quite impolite. It's unclear how she could have known my situation without even asking for my name or birth date to look up my file—she simply said, "You'll get the news when we send it." I was phoning in the first place because I've had issues with my mail delivery and sometimes don't get my correspondence.

doctor dismissed my fatigue as motherhood

I've generally had positive encounters at this medical practice and my healthcare concerns have typically been addressed satisfactorily. Nevertheless, my latest appointment left me feeling somewhat dismissed and lacking proper support. I brought up my persistent tiredness and overall sense of being drained—both mentally and physically—but the doctor's response was dismissive, attributing it simply to my new role as a parent. Being a first-time parent shouldn't minimize or justify the difficulties I'm experiencing with my own wellbeing. I felt that remark was rather disrespectful and functioned as a way to shut down the conversation rather than explore my symptoms further. While I recognize the pressures and challenges that come with working in the NHS and have empathy for those demands, I believe we all have a responsibility to provide genuine care to everyone we encounter. In this instance, I simply expected more attentiveness and understanding from my doctor.

Dr. Strickland-Palmer really took time to listen

I've never experienced any issues at this surgical practice, and I'm consistently satisfied with the treatment I get. Today was typical in that regard. However, Dr. Strickland-Palmer truly exceeded expectations today. She made me feel heard and gave me confidence about a concern that had been weighing on me heavily. She's left me in a wonderful mood. :)

Doctor Carey made the appointment worthwhile

You know, the receptionists can be a bit grumpy sometimes, but honestly, I'd probably be the same way if I dealt with so many people. The actual doctors are great though. My partner saw Doctor Carey and he was absolutely fantastic.

Dr Carey always finds time to explain things

I've been a patient at this practice for just a couple of months, but the quality of care is exceptional. I'm always able to secure appointments for both myself and my kids without difficulty. Dr Carey, you're an invaluable member of the Stenhouse team. Your willingness to take the time and effort to provide detailed explanations is truly appreciated.

Waited 35 minutes as caller number one

I've never experienced such poor service at a medical practice before....nobody picks up when you call! I waited 35 minutes to speak with someone despite being first in the queue. How is it possible that I'm first in line yet still had to wait 35 minutes for someone to answer???? I would rate you zero stars if that were an option!!! 🙄🙄

couldn't reach them for a november update

I was referred to a gastroenterologist back in November, but I've had no luck getting in touch. I attempted to message through the online portal, but it showed as unavailable. I tried the NHS app to send a message with the same result. When I called, I was stuck in a queue for around 20 minutes. I contacted the hospital directly about my referral status, only to be told I'd need to speak with my GP. All I wanted was a simple update on my situation. After finally reaching someone, I was offered an appointment 4 weeks away 🤨 and then people wonder why emergency departments are overwhelmed.

Nurse dismissed my cough, doctor found asthma

I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel compelled to now. Last year I experienced persistent coughing and swollen gums for three months. Getting a 10am appointment was nearly impossible due to my teaching job. When I finally secured one months later, I was seen by a nurse who seemed disinterested. After mentioning my symptoms, she complained I hadn't come sooner and quickly blamed perfume allergies without any examination. For my gums, she simply said to see a dentist and made me feel foolish. As someone who seldom visits doctors, I deserved better attention. In February half-term, after choking repeatedly at night, I managed to grab a cancellation and saw a doctor who was exceptional. She conducted a proper assessment and discovered my symptoms weren't recorded from my previous visit. Within minutes, I was diagnosed with asthma—a condition that can cause bleeding gums too. A year overdue, but at least I finally had answers. This doctor was wonderful and deserves five stars. She was dismayed when I told her about the nurse. When I called around 10:10am about heart palpitations, I waited 50 minutes only to be told no slots were available and to try tomorrow, despite working at school. I've given up trying. My mother calls at 10am sharp repeatedly with no luck, but after emailing a complaint, they suddenly offered her an appointment—suggesting they intentionally withhold them. The local pharmacist confirmed she's high-risk and should have priority, yet she had to use the walk-in centre. My father collapsed at the airport last year and was unconscious, which had never happened. He called when home, and a receptionist diagnosed him with norovirus over the phone without an appointment. This surgery is appallingly inefficient, but I'm grateful for the blonde-haired doctor with glasses—she's the only one genuinely invested in patient care.

waited all week to get a rude receptionist

Attempted to reach the office daily during the week of February 17th, with wait times consistently between 18-23 people in the queue at 8am. Finally got through on the 20th and requested a callback, which I received. However, the receptionist who called was extremely impolite, dismissive, and completely unhelpful. She insisted I either ring back tomorrow or visit the walk-in clinic, despite my simple request for a doctor to contact me. While I don't frequently need medical attention, her attitude explains why patients seek care elsewhere. People calling for assistance deserve to be treated with respect, not spoken to in such a manner. This receptionist would clearly benefit from customer service training.

When my 2-year-old daughter came down with an illness, we reached out to Stenhouse Medical Centre around 5:30 pm. We were pleasantly amazed when Dr. Joanne Carey called us back right away and generously extended her hours to check on my daughter, who was running a fever. I'm incredibly thankful to Stenhouse Medical Centre and particularly to Dr. Joanne Carey for her compassion, expertise, and commitment to her patients. Her exceptional care and attention are truly outstanding. We're so grateful—thank you!
