During the initial COVID lockdown, I received texts from the medical practice first instructing me to self-isolate, then another specifying I was in the "increased risk group" for Coronavirus. When school colleagues in the same category started getting vaccinated and I'd heard nothing, I decided to contact the surgery. I spoke with a pleasant receptionist who was uncertain whether I fell into the 55+ group or might be called earlier due to my previous cancer history. She suggested that since I'd originally been texted, I should hear back soon. Two weeks later, hearing nothing, I phoned again. The receptionist on 5th March was hostile from the outset. Discourteous, curt, and extremely unhelpful, she didn't even take the trouble to note my name. Whenever I attempted to explain my situation, she talked over me. I sensed she believed I was trying to jump the queue, which was absolutely not my intention. I simply wanted clarity about my vaccination group. She proceeded to give me a mini-lecture about teachers and police also inquiring about the vaccine. When I tried to seek clarification, she sarcastically asked if I had learning difficulties. Her tone left me unsure whether she was being genuinely sarcastic or deliberately offensive. I comprehend the surgery is struggling with vaccine supply and must be overwhelmed, but being spoken to in such a manner is completely unacceptable. So I continue to wait patiently to be called.

Given the cold, snowy conditions on the day of my visit, my sole suggestion would be for them to consider sending a confirmation text message to reassure patients about the site's operational status and help reduce phone inquiries for staff. Nonetheless, my personal experience at the surgery was positive, and I would strongly recommend that anyone invited to receive the vaccine should do so without hesitation.
