Receptionists made it too hard to ask for help

I regret not switching practices earlier. The difficulty in accessing support meant I eventually stopped trying to seek help. Routine appointments have a lengthy waiting period and can only be booked by phone, which is challenging if you're unable to make repeated calls at opening time due to health constraints. The majority of appointments are conducted remotely rather than in person. The reception staff came across as unwelcoming and unhelpful. They seemed focused on enforcing procedures rather than exploring ways to assist, and I frequently encountered an inflexible approach to problem-solving. I required a letter for accessibility purposes at the request of a local authority. The practice prepared the letter but only informed me afterwards that there would be a charge, without discussing this beforehand. When the practice transitioned to a digital system for managing ongoing medications, I discovered that a medication I had been regularly requesting was not actually set up for automatic renewal. Upon contacting them, I was informed it would take several weeks to arrange a consultation to rectify this. It wasn't until I moved to a different practice that I recognised how much I had withdrawn from seeking medical support when I genuinely needed it. I would suggest exploring alternative surgeries if receiving attentive care is important to you.

The reception team here are genuinely pleasant, and the doctors are equally welcoming. I'm pleased I made the decision to switch surgeries.

Phone appointments didn't address my concerns properly

I contacted the practice yesterday to arrange an appointment. I was only offered a telephone consultation, and during the call, no medication was prescribed nor was an in-person visit suggested despite what I felt were significant symptoms. A few hours later, I required emergency care. I believe this situation could have been prevented had face-to-face appointments been available. In my view, telephone consultations are not effective for my needs.

Impossible to reach, month-long wait for phone call

If you experience respiratory concerns, you're advised to ring back the following morning at 8am, though this resulted in an appointment being scheduled approximately four weeks away.... A remote consultation to determine whether an in-person visit is necessary. This means I've been given a telephone appointment roughly 30 days ahead to assess if I actually require a face-to-face appointment? I'm unable to secure same-day slots when calling at 8am.... As this is when most people attempt to reach the practice. After 8.30am..... Available appointments have been taken. Staff cannot allocate slots for the next day or elsewhere in the week, so patients must accept appointments scheduled a month in advance. This practice would benefit from reviewing its own systems rather than relying on patient persistence. I also attended previously with a significant arm injury approximately a year ago, and was directed to attend hospital as the practice was closing. The hospital subsequently discharged me with dressing materials and medication. This practice appears to struggle with providing comprehensive care pathways for patients.

Online booking system works quickly and well

I recently relocated to the area and needed to register with a new GP practice. I was hesitant about choosing this one after reading some of the negative feedback online, but I'm pleased I decided to give it a chance rather than being put off by the critical reviews. I've found the online appointment booking and rescheduling system to be efficient, with the practice always responding promptly to requests. The midwife was particularly supportive and patient during my care, taking time to listen and chat with me even when she had a busy schedule. One of the doctors was also very attentive during my postnatal check following the birth of my child, ensuring a thorough examination. The reception team have consistently been courteous and accommodating. I think some people are simply more inclined to complain and have unrealistic expectations of healthcare services.

Phone queue delays made appointment impossible

After informing the receptionist (once they eventually answered the phone) that my telephone appointment with the clinician would need the number to be displayed as my phone automatically diverts withheld numbers to voicemail, the number was withheld anyway and I missed the appointment. I contacted the practice to request a callback with the number not withheld but was informed nothing could be done about it. I had recently received a diagnosis and was hoping to use the appointment to get guidance and support, but felt my concerns were not taken seriously. I also mentioned I was running low on medication, which similarly did not seem to be addressed. I feel the reception team here are difficult to get through to and unhelpful when issues arise.
