I am very disappointed with how my mother’s appointment request was handled today. I called the surgery because my mother was experiencing the same symptoms for which I had previously needed to take her to hospital. I explained to the receptionist that I was concerned and that I considered the situation serious. I was told that it was not an emergency and that I would have to complete the triage form instead. I specifically asked whether this would result in a same-day appointment and was told that it would not, as same-day appointments were only for emergencies. I explained again why I was concerned, but I was still refused an appointment and told to complete the form. I was also told that there were no appointments available, although I understood that an appointment was available. I found the way my concerns were handled very upsetting, particularly because this involved the same symptoms that had previously resulted in my mother needing hospital treatment. I hope the practice reviews how urgent appointment requests are handled and ensures that patients and their concerns are listened to appropriately.
