Felt genuinely listened to and understood

I was accompanying a vulnerable family member during their appointment; it was our first visit with this clinician. My family member has experienced several challenging interactions within the NHS previously and struggles with attending appointments or discussing their health concerns openly. The clinician demonstrated strong observational skills and recognised that, based on the patient's demeanour, there were considerable obstacles affecting their ability to access suitable care. They built effective rapport by showing interest in the patient's personal matters and thoughtfully addressing various questions that fell outside the scope of their health issues. Although the patient was reluctant to discuss their concerns directly, they felt at ease with me explaining the situation on their behalf and, in contrast to previous experiences, remained throughout the appointment. They felt heard and valued, and they were pleased with the suggestions that were offered.
