Phone triage adds unnecessary steps to appointments

When you ring to request a GP appointment, the receptionist asks the GP to assess your case and calls you back. You may then be offered an appointment, though it might be with a nurse or pharmacist rather than a GP. While these professionals are competent, they need to consult with the GP afterwards, return to discuss the GP's decision, and if a prescription is needed, it must be submitted for a GP to authorise later in the day. The entire process from initial call to completion takes around 50 minutes, despite what could potentially be resolved in a brief ten-minute GP consultation. This approach feels counterproductive rather than an improvement, as it creates additional steps for staff and introduces the possibility that something significant could be overlooked.
