The patient had previously attended for consultation about significant cognitive concerns. Reception staff indicated they had no documentation of the letter and instructed that a telephone call would need to be made at an early morning time. Given the patient's communication challenges and memory difficulties, this approach presented practical obstacles. The experience raised concerns about whether adequate consideration was given to the particular needs of patients with dementia and older age groups.
