towards patients

It is always very difficult to get an appointment at this GP surgery. The receptionist asked me to call back for five weeks. When I explained that I had received a letter from the NHS asking me to arrange this screening as soon as possible, she still told me that she could only see appointments up to two weeks ahead on the system and that there were no appointments available in that period. She asked me to call again the following week. I then asked what I should do since I had already received reminder letters from the NHS. I asked whether I should inform the NHS that my GP did not have any appointments available for five weeks, and even asked if I should consider registering with a new GP. She replied that it was “up to me” and again told me to try calling next week. About 10 minutes later she called me back and said that a patient had just cancelled their appointment and she could give it to me. However, the appointment she offered was one month from the day I called. This left me very confused. If the receptionist could only see appointments up to two weeks ahead on the system, how was there suddenly a cancelled appointment available one month ahead? I would like clarification on how the appointment system works, as this experience was very frustrating, especially given that I was trying to arrange an NHS-requested screening.
